Working on Live & Repaired Mains — for the Blue Card assessment

Bursts and repairs, flushing, and returning a main safely to supply.

Free practice No account needed

A burst or a repair opens the main up, and that is exactly when contamination can get in. The assessment checks you know how to keep a repair clean and prove it is safe before it carries drinking water again.

What live and repaired mains covers in the assessment

  • When a main bursts or is repaired, contamination can get in, so the work is kept as clean as possible
  • Isolate and control the water so the excavation does not fill with contaminated water; if it floods, de-water it
  • Keep the pipe interior and the excavation clean, and cap open ends
  • Fittings are cleaned or disinfected, and the section is swabbed and flushed
  • Where required, a sample is taken and must pass before the main returns to supply
  • Never return a repaired main to supply without the required flushing and disinfection

Where people slip up

Letting the trench flood and laying into dirty water.

Rushing a repair back into supply without flushing or sampling.

Leaving the open main uncapped while you fetch parts.
